Exquisite vase of Zuid-Holland

Art Nouveau

Gouda
Circa 1907-1910
Perfect condition

This unique vase from the South Holland factory is an impressive example of Dutch Art Nouveau, standing at a substantial 54 cm (21.25 inches) in height. The vase is in excellent condition and is beautifully decorated with an orchid motif, surrounded by organic leaf patterns rendered in elegant, flowing lines. The curved lines and edges, intricately designed between the vegetal motifs, enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.

This design was influenced by the renowned Kunstaardewerk Rozenburg and applied to the successful eggshell porcelain style. However, unlike the fragile eggshell porcelain, this South Holland vase is crafted with a thicker shard and a different clay composition, giving it a sturdier feel. Early production of this vase, between 1907 and 1910, involved time-consuming decoration techniques, which later evolved as the filling techniques changed, with the curved lines eventually disappearing from the process.

The form of the vase and its applied decoration complement and enrich each other, making it a wonderful example of Dutch Art Nouveau. This piece is a testament to the artistic innovation and craftsmanship of the South Holland factory during this period.
