Rare Kangxi vase with the eight horses of Wang Mu

Aziatische objecten

China
Kangxi 1662-1722
19 cm high

This rare Kangxi vase, standing 19 cm (approximately 7.5 inches) tall, is a remarkable piece of Chinese porcelain from the reign of Emperor Kangxi. The vase depicts the legendary eight horses of Wang Mu, a story about King Wang Mu, who aspired to become an immortal and tasted the peaches of immortality in the heavenly paradise. A brave charioteer named Zaofu used his chariot, drawn by these eight horses—each named after their hair color—to carry the king to his celestial destination.

The vase’s green celadon background is particularly intense, with decorations created using underglaze cobalt blue and copper red. The cobalt blue is of the finest quality, typically seen only on the best Kangxi items. The copper red has been skillfully misfired to achieve a brown tone, perfectly representing the horses’ fur. The painting is of exceptional quality, with a continuous scene of the horses galloping, grazing, and lounging under a towering pine tree. Their coats are beautifully decorated in underglaze blue, red, and white slip, all set against the vibrant green ground, with the interior finished in white.

The vase is marked with a double circle on the base, indicating its authenticity and high craftsmanship. One chip at the base has been reglued, but the overall quality and rarity of this vase make it a highly valuable and desirable piece for any collector.
