China
Kangxi 1662-1722

The brush pot you described is a remarkable example of Chinese porcelain, rich with symbolism and cultural significance. Here’s a breakdown of the key elements and their meanings:

1. Kuixing:
Role: Kuixing is an acolyte of Wenzhang, the God of Literature. He is an important figure in Chinese folklore, particularly associated with scholars and literary success.
Symbolism: Kuixing is often depicted standing on one leg atop a dragon's head, symbolizing the scholar's ascent and success in the rigorous imperial examinations. The dragon, often a carp that transforms after leaping through the Dragon Gate, represents the ultimate achievement and transformation, paralleling the scholar's journey to success and high status.

2. Iconography:
Brush and Bushel Measure: The brush Kuixing holds is a direct reference to literary pursuits and scholarly achievements, while the bushel measure symbolizes the accumulation of knowledge and merits.
Dragon and Waves: The dragon emerging from the waves is a powerful symbol of strength, transformation, and ascension. The waves and the dragon combined evoke the challenges and triumphs that come with scholarly success.
Prunus Tree and Rocks: Prunus (plum) blossoms are often associated with perseverance and purity, blooming in the harsh winter, symbolizing resilience and strength in adversity. Rocks signify stability and endurance, grounding the dynamic scene.

3. Poem:
The four-line poem inscribed on the brush pot enhances its cultural and artistic value. The poem is full of rich imagery:
Nine Heavens filled with clouds and mist: Suggests vastness and the ethereal nature of scholarly pursuits.
Great bear holding ten thousand measures of pearls: Could symbolize the constellations (Great Bear or Ursa Major) guiding scholars, with pearls representing wisdom and knowledge.
Hand holding the great treasure and giving peaceful times: Likely refers to the brush and the wisdom it yields, bringing harmony and order.
Feet treading on ten thousand miles of clouds: A metaphor for the scholar’s far-reaching influence and the journey through intellectual and bureaucratic challenges.

4. Provenance:
The brush pot’s provenance adds significant historical and cultural value. It has passed through prestigious collections and dealers, including Spink & Son, Ralph M. Chait Galleries, and Feng-Chun Ma Art Consultancy. Each of these owners and sellers is known for dealing in high-quality and historically important Chinese art.

5. Artistic and Cultural Value:
This brush pot is not just a utilitarian object but a piece of art that reflects the deep reverence for scholarship and the civil service in Chinese culture. The depiction of Kuixing on this brush pot would have been particularly inspiring to a scholar or an aspirant, serving as both a reminder and a symbol of their literary ambitions.
The object, given its detailed depiction, poem, and provenance, represents a high level of craftsmanship and cultural richness, making it a significant piece of Chinese art. Its connection to the theme of scholarly success would have made it an especially prized possession for a scholar or collector with an interest in Chinese literary culture.

China
Kangxi 1662-1722

This rare pair of blue and white jugs is an exquisite example of traditional Chinese porcelain, richly decorated with symbolic motifs. Painted in cobalt blue, each jug features two recesses, each depicting a pair of boys carrying a lotus. In Chinese culture, the lotus ("lian") forms a rebus representing a wish for continuous male offspring, enhancing the symbolic significance of the design.

The boys are traditionally dressed like babies, wearing nothing more than a bib fastened around their necks, with their hair shaved in the customary style. The jugs are adorned with additional symbols, including a swastika on the lid and rim, and a luck symbol on the neck, completing the auspicious message of prosperity and endless fortune. On the back, a linzhi mushroom, symbolizing immortality, and the front displays a lozenge for victory and success on one jug and a beautiful flower on the other, adding beauty and charm.

These intricately detailed pieces, with the boys’ traditional attire and symbolic decoration, represent a rare and highly collectible set. Although one lid has a small restored chip, the rarity and artistic craftsmanship make this pair a remarkable find. Height: 21 cm.

These impressive large yellow vases are extraordinary examples of 19th-century Chinese craftsmanship, reflecting both artistic mastery and cultural significance. Vases of this size are exceptionally difficult to produce, making them rare and highly prized among collectors and historians. The intricate scenes depicted on the vases feature horseback soldiers riding into battle across a mountainous landscape, all set against a vibrant yellow background. Traditionally, yellow is the color associated with the emperor, symbolizing fame, prosperity, and protection against evil.

Adding to the vases' historical significance, the base of each vase bears the prominent characters of Emperor Chenghua.

Standing at an impressive 88 cm (34.65 inches) in height, these vases are remarkable not only for their size and detailed artistry but also for their deep symbolic meaning. They embody the grandeur and authority associated with the Chinese tradition, making them more than just decorative objects—they are pieces of history. Owning these vases is akin to possessing a tangible link to the splendor of China’s imperial past.
